He threatens to drop her, she vows to leave him — Two acrobats go valiantly through the complexities of their routine, smiling toothily, bowing on cue, and, all the while, conducting a sotto voce but lacerating marital spat. This clever, whimsical playlet, which was originally presented Off-Broadway on a double bill with Line, depicts two "acrobats" engaged in a running marital feud while, at the same time, going through the intricacies of their routine.
Taryn Kleeband is bound and determined to put her cast through a rigorous and demanding routine ensuring that Acrobats will not only be a searing emotional journey but will also be a hyper-kinetic physical journey too.
The Talent
Darsey Meredith - Edna
Darsey has been a performer all her life. She began acting on stage at the age of seven with Sidekick Players’ “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, and has continued to perform in community theatre productions, as well as in short films. Most recently, she has been seen as Romaine Patterson in Sidekick’s rendition of “The Laramie Project” and Violet in “Faith County II”. Darsey has also trained in competitive cheerleading, tumbling, trampoline, and various dance styles for many years. She is currently in her third year studying film production at SFU.
Parker Heuser- Husband
Parker is currently a bartender who lives in downtown Vancouver. Acting has always been a passion of his, and as a young actor, he took part in various high school plays and productions, one of which is particularly relevant; a short playlet named Acrobats.
Returning to the role, Parker has been focusing on physical fitness, strength and flexibility, continuing to be very health conscious. Though not professionally trained in martial arts or dance, he is a well versed acrobat and a natural born entertainer who will bring good humour and a natural sociability to the role.
Taryn Kleeband - Director
Taryn has been involved in community theatre since 1999, starting on the stage with Sidekick Player's "Pinocchio". She continued to perform onstage throughout her youth and high school years. Directorial credits include the hilarious one-act play "Scent of a Banana", as well as writing/directing an original one-act titled "Toughing it Out". She has most recently been seen on stage as Jan in Sidekick's "I'll Be Back Before Midnight", and behind the scenes directing "Chester, You Owe My Bird An Apology", as well as "The Melville Boys", also with Sidekick Players. Taryn has been a competitive cheerleader for 12 years, and coaches cheerleading & tumbling full time for Panther Cheer Athletics in Richmond.
The Story
When Taryn was approached by Standing Room Only and The Page Theatre to direct a one-act play her mind was ablaze with the possibilities. One play stuck out more than any other, one that she had seen in high school that she distinctly remembers from it's uncompromising combination of scything wit and over the top physicality; namely Acrobats.
As stunting & tumbling within the sport of all-star cheer is an everyday thing for Taryn, a play involving any similar aspect was bound to catch her eye. The fact that Acrobats is also layered with the complexities of a relationship in the midst of crisis was just the icing on the cake.
From a young age, Taryn was deeply attracted to the opportunity to present conflict on stage through physicality, and this short play definitely fits the mold. She is very excited to share Edna & her husband's story with you through Standing Room Only & The Page Theatre's evening of theatre - "These Three Things".
The Company
Standing Room Only Theatre may only just be an infant (we had our very first event in February 2014) but that hasn't stopped us from jumping into the Vancouver theatre scene with both feet (and an umbrella!). With three founding members, SRO was created to try new things, tell luxurious stories and exercise Vancouver's vivid -and sometimes wild- imaginations. We want to take on a variety of works from charming classics to challenging new writing with passion, enthusiasm and our own brand of originality to entice our audiences stop and think - after all, is it art if people don't talk about it? We want to facilitate a conversation here in Canada - in fact many conversations - and we want to hear what you have to say about art, life, love and war.
